General Therapy

Behavioral Health Residential Facility Program

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

PHA Residential offers:

Psychotherapy, refers to a broad category of treatment provided by mental health professionals where individuals discuss their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to address various mental health concerns, life challenges, or personal issues through conversation with a therapist; essentially, it's "talk therapy" aimed at improving overall wellbeing and coping mechanisms.

Key Features of General Therapy

  1. Behavioral and Emotional Support: General therapy targets improving emotional well-being and coping mechanisms.
  2. Non-Medical Approach: Unlike psychiatric therapy, this form of therapy does not include medication management.
  3. Diverse Modalities: Therapists may employ approaches like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps people learn to manage their emotions and change unhelpful behaviors:

What it is

DBT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that teaches people to accept their experiences and behaviors while also making positive changes. The name "dialectical" refers to the combination of opposite ideas.

Who it's for

DBT is often used to treat people with borderline personality disorder (BPD), highly effective for individuals with substance use disorders or who have difficulty controlling their emotions. It can also be used to treat mood disorders, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

How it works

DBT teaches people skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is divided into four stages of treatment, each with a different goal.

How it's delivered

DBT involves weekly skills groups and weekly individual therapy sessions with a therapist. The skills groups typically meet for one to two hours per week.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of talk therapy that can be effective in treating co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis:

How it works

CBT helps people identify and change harmful thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their issues. It can also help people develop skills to manage symptoms and prevent relapse.

 Benefits

CBT can help people:

  • Identify triggers for addiction
  • Mitigate cravings
  • Become aware of high-risk situations
  • Focus on present problems
  • Learn to relax
  • Apply social and communication techniques

Effectiveness

CBT is considered one of the most effective treatments for co-occurring disorders. It's most effective when used early on, within the first 6 months after treatment.

Milieu Therapy

Milieu Therapy is a therapeutic community.

(TC) as a model of treatment is based on family and community. It is fundamentally a self-help approach which strives to sustain the main characteristics of a prosocial and positive family environment. This includes structure to provide order in daily living; nurturance through physical and psychological safety; individual acceptance and encouragement, conditional only upon honest participation; and the transmission of healthy values* .

The total 24-hour house environmental milieu (surroundings) of the therapeutic community (TC) provides a unique opportunity for therapy. Formal structured group and individual therapy sessions are of major importance, but so too are the more reality-based therapies of working together, recreating together, relaxing together, decision-making, problem-solving, empathizing, reaching out, helping and teaching. All activities are considered part of therapy, and are directed towards assisting the person to develop their skills and identity and work toward managing their own recovery. Even the most fundamental necessities, such as laundry, cooking, maintenance and office work can be therapeutic, and are also vital in developing essential life skills. In fact work is one of the most distinctive components of the therapeutic community (TC) model.

Contingency management (CM)

Contingency management (CM)

Contingency management (CM)

Contingency management (CM) is a behavioral therapy technique that uses rewards and consequences to encourage positive behaviors and discourage negative ones. It's often used to treat substance use disorders (SUDs), but can also be used to treat other behavioral problems like smoking, eating disorders, and aggression.

CM is based on the principle of operant conditioning, which states that behavior is shaped by its consequences. It involves providing or withholding rewards and consequences in response to a measurable behavior, such as a drug test. For example, a member might receive vouchers for retail goods if they abstain from substance use, or have their vouchers withheld if they use substances.

CM is used in conjunction with other evidence-based therapies.
